Our City, Our Voice: Themes for a New City Logo
Project Update, July 31, 2024: The results are in! Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in engagement opportunities. Input and feedback collected through the engagement have been summarized and compiled in a What We Heard Report. Click here to read the report.
Included in the report is the word cloud below, which captures 400+ responses to questions asking participants to describe New Westminster in 1-3 words. A few variations of this question were asked in the survey, at the pop-ups, Community Workshop and other meetings. The larger a word appears in the image, the more times it was mentioned by participants.
A summary of the engagement process and community input gathered was shared with the graphic design firm that was hired to create the new logo. Engagement results will also be shared with Council and the community working group as they work to review the concepts created by the graphic designers in fall 2024. The City plans to have a new logo and brand developed by the end of the year.
Project update, July 8, 2024: Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to share their ideas on what makes New Westminster unique! While staff work to compile the full What We Heard Report, here are the quick results on which group of photos make folks think of New Westminster the most ⬇️
This question was asked at all of our pop-ups and workshop, as well as a few other engagement opportunities throughout the month of June.
Stay tuned for more detailed results from the engagement!

Your input and feedback will now be shared with the graphic design firm to inform the creation of our new logo. Stay tuned for updates as we move into the design phase, and we look forward to unveiling a logo that truly represents the spirit and identity of New Westminster.
What’s happening?
The City of New Westminster is working to redesign its corporate logo.
In July 2022, Council passed a motion to begin the process of updating the City’s logo. The motion also asked City staff to engage with the community in the development of a new logo “that is inclusive and allows for collective pride in our City.”
The City’s current logo features a gold crown above the words "New Westminster". This logo was adopted in 2008, replacing the previous logo, which showed the City’s Coat of Arms with the words "Corporation of the City of New Westminster" around it.
Note: while Council’s original motion also referenced phasing out use of the “Royal City” nickname, the City has not used this tagline in official communications for several years. The tagline will not be discussed as part of the community engagement.
Work has been underway for several months, and now we are ready to hear from the community about what makes New Westminster unique, how we collectively see ourselves as a community, and what we envision New West will be known for in the future.
The City has hired a graphic design firm to create the new logo design, but we need the community’s input to understand the essence of New West to capture in that design.
We have also established a community working group to help guide the process towards a new logo. So far, the group has met twice and worked collaboratively with staff and the graphic designers to develop the plans for community engagement. Check out our FAQs for more information about the working group!
How can I engage?
All voices are welcome – we want to hear from a diverse range of New Westminster residents, including people who have lived in New Westminster for many years, and those who have come to the city more recently!
Help us understand how you see New Westminster. Tell us what landmarks, natural elements, or parts of the built environment make New Westminster unique to you. What aspects of our community culture and identity do you find special? Share how you connect with the history of our city and your vision for how you see New Westminster in the future. How do you want others to see New Westminster, both regionally and beyond?

Next steps
Results from this engagement will help staff and the graphic designers understand how our community sees New Westminster. Your input will be compiled and shared with the graphic designers as they work to develop preliminary themes and design direction for a new logo.
Engagement results will also be summarized here and shared with Council and the community working group as they work to review the concepts created by the graphic designers in early fall. The City hopes to have a new logo and brand developed by the end of the year.
After a new logo is finalized, the City plans a phased approach to rebranding City assets and will update existing items as materials need to be replenished or replacements are required. This means there will be a period of time when both the current and new logos will be seen around the community.
