FAQs
Why are you asking the community about outdoor swimming in December?
Several regular pool maintenance items must occur prior to re-opening an outdoor swimming pool for the operating season. This work can take up to six weeks. As well, the Spring recreation program must be developed by the end of January in order to print the Active Living Guide and let the community know before registration begins in February. These deadlines mean that we must have an understanding of the community’s preferences and needs before the end of December.
Why is Hume Park Outdoor Pool not scheduled to open early this year?
Hume Park Outdoor Pool has a number of capital project upgrades that are scheduled to be completed this spring. This work can not be rescheduled. For the 2022 operating season, the pool will open in late June and potentially extend its operating season into fall should the demand be present for a longer pool season.
Hume Park Outdoor Pool has been closed for two years. Why are you waiting until this spring to do the mechanical repairs?
The capital repairs that are scheduled to be completed must be done in conjunction with prepping the pool for an operational season. The mechanical repairs are done in conjunction with draining, prepping the surface of the tank, refilling and treating the pool. This work was scheduled for 2022 before the City was faced with the unexpected Canada Games Pool decommissioning. With current supply and procurement timelines, the pool will not be ready to open until late June.
What if the weather is too cold?
When the outdoor air temperature is colder or wetter, the pool temperature feels warmer because of the temperature differential between outside air and pool temperature. As with regular operating procedures, the pool will close in weather conditions that pose a health risk to staff or public i.e. below freezing, or electrical storms.
Has the City considered adding a dome or temporary roof to Moody Park Pool?
Doming or covering an outdoor swimming pool (or creating a natatorium) is a complex issue. A key consideration is the cost of the temporary cover, which is significant and not currently included in the City’s financial plan.
There are other factors as well, such as equipment to manage excess moisture in an uninsulated structure, and the need for a separate, specialized air handling unit to manage air quality in a pool environment where there are many chemicals present.
Will my Active Pass work at the outdoor pools?
An outdoor 10- visit Active Pass is available for $20.00 and is accepted at our outdoor pools. No outdoor monthly pass is available specifically for outdoors. However, if you have an indoor monthly Active Pass it can be used to visit Moody Park Pool.
Can I use my subsidy outdoors?
Subsidy is not available for outdoor pools. The outdoor pools are heavily subsidized at $2.00 a visit and are free on weekends. We expect to maintain these admission rates for the 2022 outdoor pool season.
