What's an indoor sports court?
An indoor sports court is a designated, flexible gymnasium space within a City recreation centre or facility that’s used for multi-sport play. These spaces include opportunities for a variety of sports, including tennis, pickleball, basketball, ball hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, badminton, and soccer.
Why are you asking the community about sports court usage?
There has been a growing demand for sports court space from competing user groups. In an effort to continue to support all user groups and offer a range of sports court programming within New Westminster, we are reviewing existing offered drop-ins days, times and courts and looking to better match community needs.
How is court space currently allocated?
The City provides user groups with bookable spaces in a fair and equitable manner to improve the quality of life and leisure pursuits of residents and its visitors. Space demand often exceeds availability and thereby, the City follows the Facility Allocation Policy & Procedure 69863-2010. The application and allocation of ongoing court space is done twice a year. The criteria for priority of use follows:
The following considerations can also influence the priority of use criteria in the allocation of space:
How do private bookings work for indoor and outdoor court spaces?
After City programs and user groups have been allocated space, whatever space is left over is open for private bookings. For open time slots, booking requests are considered on a first-come-first-served basis.
To reserve or book a court, contact the Parks and Recreation Administration Office at 604-527-4567 between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Or, complete the Sports Fields, Courts and Track Request form at www.newwestcity.ca/services/sport-fields-and-courts-request-form
Are there any opportunities to add additional court spaces to the City offerings?
The City currently has no plans to add additional City-operated sports courts. With the relocating of Canada Games Pool fitness equipment to Centennial Community Centre, the city is developing and evaluating alternative service delivery options for regular fitness and drop-in sports programs. There is no intention to cancel any programs currently being offered and we are working hard to ensure that any displaced programs continue to be offered. This includes utilizing private and community facilities to relocate these programs.
