What is happening?

The City of New Westminster has committed to looking for alternatives to deliver swimming and aquatics programming in the aftermath of the announced decommissioning of the Canada Games Pool earlier than planned. On November 24, 2021 City Council announced the immediate decommissioning of the community’s beloved Canada Games Pool due to mechanical and structural failure. Click here for more information.

In an effort to continue offering aquatics programming within New West while the new təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre is under construction, we are looking to extend the outdoor pool seasons for both Moody and Hume Park outdoor pools. Historically, the outdoor pools would be open from the last week of June until Labour Day, for the hours of 12:00-8:00 pm daily.

We need community input on what programs and services you would use and attend if the Moody Park Outdoor Pool was to open as early as mid-April 2022, and stay open until as late as October 2022. Repairs are needed at Hume Park Outdoor Pool before it opens for the season, so it will not be available for an early opening in 2022 (opening is anticipated for late June). However, we are considering keeping Hume Park Pool open as late as October 2022.

We need to know your preferences now in order to prepare the facilities, staff and program schedules to open Moody Park Pool as early as April! Complete our short survey and have your say on how you think the outdoor pools should be used next year! Survey closes on December 28, 2021.

Hello and thanks for your question.

Hume Park Outdoor Pool will re-open in the summer of 2022 and we will evaluate extending the operating seasons of this pool for fall 2022 and the 2023 operating year based on the results of this engagement process.

Hume Pool is approved to undergo capital mechanical upgrades in the spring of 2022 prior to the summer operating season. These mechanical upgrades will ensure the pool will be able to operate safely and efficiently for the upcoming outdoor pool seasons. At this time there are no Council-approved plans in place to make any structural changes to this outdoor pool facility.

Hello and thanks for your question. Proof of vaccination will not be required to access outdoor pools in New Westminster. These regulations are set by the BC Provincial Health Orders. Click here for information from the provincial government about places where proof of vaccination is required, and places that are exempt (including swimming pools).

The use of swimming pools is considered a low-risk activity for transmission of Covid-19 as long as the pool is operated and properly maintained.

Hello and thanks for your question. Doming or covering an outdoor swimming pool (or creating a natatorium) is a complex issue. A key consideration is the cost of the temporary cover, which is significant and not currently included in the City’s financial plan. There are other factors as well, such as equipment to manage excess moisture in an uninsulated structure, and the need for a separate, specialized air handling unit to manage air quality in a pool environment where there are many chemicals present.

Would the pools be warmer then normal during the early/late part of the season

Alison I asked almost 3 years ago

Hello and thank you for your question. The outdoor pools will be set to approximately 83.5 degrees throughout the season, even in early and later months.

While the pool temperature will not be warmer than normal during the earlier and later seasons, it will feel warmer due to the temperature difference between the pool temperature and the outside ambient air temperature. On cool days, the pool water will feel quite warm.

If the pool water is heated warmer than the set point, it can cause swimmers to overheat during lap and exercise swim sessions. It can also cause greater steam and impede the lifeguards' ability to adequately supervise the pool.
